Professor Paul Thornalley BSc DPhil (oxon)

Born and raised in Lincolnshire, Professor Thornalley completed his undergraduate degree in chemistry from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology before going on to obtain a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Oxford.

He subsequently focused his career on biomedical sciences and has spent more than 25 years in systems biology with a breadth of experience starting from basic science through to clinical trials. His areas of work have impact in translational medicine, nutrition and pharmaceuticals with his focus on protein damage pathways highlighting key areas of targeted research in cancer, diabetes, arthritis, cardiovascular disease and ageing.

His research work has led to over 250 peer-reviewed articles and nearly 200 conference papers. He has supervised more than 30 PhD candidates and leads a successful research team with collaborative links in both industry and academia.

Dr Naila Rabbani BSc PhD

Dr Rabbani completed her undergraduate degree in biological and medicinal chemistry at the University of Essex before successfully pursuing a PhD at the same institution.

Her tutelage under Professor Thornalley led to improved analytical methods for identification and quantification of protein damage biomarkers which has guided her research into mechanisms of disease including diabetes, arthritis and atherosclerosis. She has continued studies developing LC-MS/MS techniques for comprehensively and quantitatively screening for protein damage in models of disease mechanisms and clinical studies.

She has published 81 peer-reviewed articles, 113 conference papers and has supervised 4 PhD students to date.
